Where to learn Spanish with locals in Colombia?
Speak the Language, Live the Culture: Why Spanish Adventure is Your Key to Authentic Colombia
Let's face it, language learning can feel tedious like being in a hamster wheel – endless drills and textbooks with minimal real-world application. But what if I told you there's a hidden gem in Colombia where you can ditch the textbooks, ditch the classroom walls, and dive headfirst into an authentic Spanish immersion experience? Strap in as I’m going to tell you all about my unforgettable adventure learning Spanish at Spanish Adventure in San Carlos, Antioquia.
Forget Tourist Traps, Embrace the Real Colombia in San Carlos
San Carlos Antioquia isn't your typical tourist destination. Located three hours from Medellin, this charming, off-the-beaten-path town nestled in the Colombian Andes boasts a rich history dating back to the 1800’s. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Medellin, San Carlos offers a slower pace, with cowboys riding their horses through the main square, locals waving hello in the main square and breathtaking mountainous surroundings. San Carlos Antioquia. allows you to truly connect with the locals and immerse yourself in the vibrant Colombian culture.
Spanish Study in Colombia: Beyond the Textbook
What truly sets Spanish Adventure apart is its unique approach to language learning. Unlike Duolingo (sorry Duo) or factory-style classes of many language schools, Spanish Adventure prioritizes personalized group classes combined with one-on-one instruction with passionate local teachers. My classes with Shirley were a game-changer. I knew next to no Spanish before arriving at the school, but by the end of my three weeks, I could hold a basic conversation with the locals! The classes are split into 16 levels, each with structured content and interactive homework to help push you out of your comfort zone. I loved the class content, from discussing the history of San Carlos to dissecting the latest reggaeton music, Shirley tailored the lessons to my interests and learning style, making the process engaging and effective.
Breaking the Language Barrier: Intercambio Nights
Learning a language is a two-way street, and Spanish Adventure understands this perfectly. The weekly "Intercambio" nights hosted at the Café Bar la Oveja Negra
were a highlight of my experience. I spent my Saturday nights sipping mango frappes (or Cervezas if I needed some liquid courage) and having lively conversations with friendly locals. I would speak in Spanish and the locals reply in English, to practice their English skills. The exchange worked perfectly and helped each of us gain confidence in a relaxed and supportive environment, gaining real-world practice beyond the classroom. I loved getting to meet many of the locals and gain friends in the community.
From Textbooks to Tradition: Embracing Colombian Culture
Another highlight of my time at Spanish Adventure Colombia was our weekly group project. Each week we would dive into an aspect of Colombian culture, learn new words and learn the traditions. From performing historical myths, to brushing off my dancing shoes and performing the El Bambuco dance to cooking arepas de chocolo for the local community. Each week gave me a deeper appreciation of Colombian culture and helped progress my Spanish by leaps and bounds.
From Classroom to Community: Befriending a Local
One of the most unexpected perks of Spanish Adventure was befriending a local named Pablo. Through the school's community events, I had the opportunity to connect with Pablo and continue our intercambio 2-3 times per week. Pablo patiently corrected my pronunciation, taught me new phrases and shared Colombian culture. These genuine conversations provided invaluable insights into Colombian life that no textbook could ever offer.
Adventure Awaits: Exploring San Carlos Beyond the Classroom
As the name suggests, Spanish Adventure isn't just about Spanish; it's about adventure in Colombia. The school organizes three thrilling excursions each week into the surrounding mountains, offering opportunities for hiking, canyoning, and tubing down crystal-clear rivers. These adventures provided a much-needed break from studying and allowed me to bond with my fellow classmates while experiencing the breathtaking beauty of the Colombian countryside. My highlight was canyoning, rappelling down a 30 meter waterfall and conquering my fear of heights by jumping from a 6 meter rock into a swimming hole.
