Are you planning a trip? here some tips

Perhaps you’ve just returned from a local “charco,” one of San Carlos’ many idyllic and lush waterfall-swimming holes and could go for a refreshing beverage to match; or maybe you just woke up after a long, unforgettable sweaty night at the discoteca and need to replenish some vitamins; or maybe you’re just in the mood for some invigorating, flavorful fresh juice because it’s always a good idea. These time-tested reasons and many more might lead you to any of the fantastic fruit and juice vendors here in San Carlos.

While the number of new fruits might be overwhelming at first, it’s a rewarding experience to simply try them all. Dozens of fruits can be found in some form at nearly every food or drink establishment, including restaurants, bars, supermarkets and roadside stands.

One of the delicious fruits in Colombia: Granadilla

Lulo, one of those fruits you only find in Colombia

Definitely try some of the passiflora-passion fruit varieties, including the granadilla, gulupa, and maracuyá, with their range of health benefits, acidity and flavors. You can enjoy their gooey delicious seeds in a lemonade, blended in a frothy juice, or directly from their shell with a spoon.

There’s Lulo and Guayava, which, while I personally didn’t enjoy eating raw, make for incredibly delicious fresh juices.

Mango, papaya and pineapple can be found pretty much everywhere here, and are always perfectly rich and sweet no matter how they are eaten.

This is Guayaba, delicious fruit perfect for juices with a lot of vitamin C

Gulupa; tasty fruit in southamerica

One can enjoy every type of fruit on a relatively cheap budget, with each one usually costing no more than a few thousand COP. You can also find the fruits growing on trees in the forest (though I don’t recommend taking as visitors here) or visit a local farm to learn about the production.

The incredibly accessible and bio-diverse nature found in San Carlos is a treasure to all who encounter it. Hiking and enjoying the fresh water that flows down from the surrounding mountains is a fabulous way to engage with this uniquely abundant environment, but enjoying the multitude of fantastic local fruits and their delicious juices is definitely the tastiest way.
